History of Seremban

Nestled in Negeri Sembilan, Seremban began as Sungai Ujong, a 19th-century tin-mining hub shaped by Malay chiefs, Chinese immigrants, and British colonial influence. Its nameโ€”meaning "swampy land" in Malayโ€”reflects its early terrain. The city flourished as a key railway stop, blending Minangkabau traditions (evident in its iconic Rumah Gadang architecture) with cosmopolitan growth. Post-independence, Seremban evolved into Negeri Sembilanโ€™s administrative capital, balancing modernity with cultural roots, from its famed lemang stalls to the serene Lake Gardens. Today, it stands as a quiet testament to Malaysiaโ€™s layered heritage.

Stop #1: Fatt Kee Beef Noodles

No trip to Seremban is complete without a bowl of Fatt Keeโ€™s legendary beef noodlesโ€”an iconic stall so beloved, its name alone sparks cravings. This family-run gem sticks to its old-school recipe: leifon noodles, springy and slick, swimming in a rich, umami-packed broth with melt-in-your-mouth beef slices. But the real star? The smoky, tender charred beef jerky hidden beneathโ€”a fragrant surprise that elevates every bite. What makes Fatt Kee truly special, though, is the warm couple behind the counter, greeting regulars with smiles and stories. Open only Fridays to Sundays, this underrated masterpiece is worth planning your weekend around. Verdict: Unmatched flavor, heartwarming service - You sure will return once you have tried it, without a doubt.

Stop #2. Por Kee Porridge

AhFor over half a century, Por Kee Porridge has been a cornerstone of Serembanโ€™s culinary scene, serving up soul-warming bowls of perfection. Their mixed pork innards porridge is a masterpieceโ€”silky-smooth rice porridge piled high with tender offal and crowned with crispy fried intestines, a nostalgic rarity that keeps regulars coming back. But donโ€™t overlook their steamed chicken (or "Wat Kai"), a textbook example of simplicity done right: juicy, buttery-soft, and paired flawlessly with fragrant rice or porridge.

While the dinner rush can get lively, the wait is worth it. From blanched bean sprouts to hearty chicken rice, every dish reflects decades of honed tradition. Verdict: A must-visit for purists and adventurers alikeโ€”where heritage tastes this good, youโ€™ll leave plotting your next visit.

Stop #3. Empayar Siew Bau

Empayar Siew Bau, known for its famous Seremban Siew Pau, has a history rooted in the culinary passion of a mother and daughter team. The business began with Loke Mei Ying, who operated a confectionery shop near the old Seremban market, selling treats like egg tarts and kaya puffs. Her daughter, Teh, helped out after school and eventually adapted her mother's chan pau recipe, using the pork filling in a pastry dough to create the siew pau. Empayar Siew Pow was established in 1988, initially focusing on the popular siew pau and later expanding to other baked goods. This is absolutely worth the hype. Stopped by for their famous Siew Pow and you will not be disappointed. Crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside-every bite was pure indulgence. If you love unique street snacks this is a must try!

Stop #4. Heirloom155

Be it homemade spinach noodles with poached chicken at Shiang Kang or butter kopi and thick butter toast at Kedai Kopi & Makanan Saudara, our first meal of the day in this friendly town is guaranteed to be hearty.

Which is why sometimes it is good to take a mid-morning caffeine break... at least before lunch.

For this purpose, one great option is Heirloom, a rustic style cafรฉ somewhat hidden along Jalan Seng Meng Lee. The cafรฉ is spacious and homey as it is housed inside a single-storey bungalow.

Bric-ร -brac filled the room, from a turquoise suitcase record player to elegantly framed prints of birds; the one of raptors was particularly stunning.

There were a few pots of plants here and there, both indoor and outdoor. Big, leafy Monstera with their Swiss cheese fenestrations; delicate and petite philodendrons, climbing up coco coir poles; even evergreen and fuss-free pothos, their ivy-like vines sprawling down to the floor.

Stop #5 Onn Kee Satay
