Step Back in Time at On Lok Yun

Tucked away near the Chalermkrung Theater in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district, On Lok Yun (ออน ล๊อก หยุ่น) has become a beloved breakfast spot—especially among Singaporean and Malaysian tourists. And it’s easy to see why.

From the moment you step inside, the café feels like a time capsule. Faded photographs cling to grey walls, vintage Milo tins sit in pale green wooden cabinets, and the scent of freshly toasted bread lingers in the air. The retro furniture and unhurried atmosphere transport you straight to the 1980s—it even reminded me of the old-school kopitiams in Georgetown. 🇹🇭

Open from 5:30 AM to around 2:30 PM (though the menu claims 4 PM—worth a try!)The place draws a mix of Thai regulars and camera-toting tourists, including backpackers fueling up for the day. The food is simple but satisfying: fluffy scrambled eggs, savory lup cheong 🥓 (Chinese sausage), and the star of the show—Egg Custard Bread with Kaya (28 baht). The toast is perfectly grilled, light, and just sweet enough to keep you coming back.

With over 90 years of history, On Lok Yun has hosted its fair share of famous faces, from legendary actor Sorapong Chatree to former Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan.

The staff were warm and welcoming—no surprise, since this is a family-run business that’s been around since 1933. When I ordered in English, one of the younger team members stepped in to help, keeping the tradition alive with a modern touch.

I couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret sitting there alone. The menu was packed with must-try dishes, but my stomach just isn’t what it used to be. (Oh, to have the bottomless appetite of my teenage years again!)

In a world that’s constantly chasing modernity, there’s something special about a no-frills coffee shop like this. It’s not just about the food—it’s about the nostalgia, the charm, and the fading authenticity of places that feel like a warm, comforting memory.

If you’re in Bangkok, make the trip. Then take a leisurely stroll to Yaowarat (Chinatown) and let the old-world vibes linger a little longer.

Because sometimes, the best journeys are the ones that take you back in time. Watch my food adventure here 👇🏻
